The bases of baseball (sport) are small plates, usually white and made of rubber, placed in a diamond shape around a baseball stadium. There are four: first, second, third, and home base (sometimes called the "home plate"). A runner needs to touch every base from first to home without being tagged or forced out in order to score a home run. While the numerical bases are usually square, the home plate is in the shape of a pentagon.
